Without lipstick many women can feel naked…
“She has a way with words, red lipstick and making an entrance”
Yet, lipstick stains on a wine glass are not a pretty sight. Then there is the debate of whether or not lipstick (and of course this will also be lipstick dependent), can affect the taste of the wine. I say this is lipstick dependant as women know certain lipsticks, lip glosses and tints will have a slight taste and/ or scent to them that you notice almost as soon as glide it across your lips or perse your lips together.
Then there’s the question of the chemicals used in the lipstick and whether these can have any affect, but let’s not get too scientifical as I wouldn’t be able to tell you if they would or not actually have any affect at all, or to which extent they do.
For these reasons you’ll see many female sommeliers will opt for naked lips when wine tasting to avoid both the unpleasant sight and potential affect it has when trying a new wine out.
What if you’re not tasting just enjoying wine? Perhaps you’re not at a formal tasting, but a relaxed dinner with friends where you’ll be drinking wine and would like to wear some lipstick on a night out. In this case there’s two options as I see it, 1. try to find a longer lasting or matte lipstick that is less likely to transfer onto the rim of the glass, and 2. lick the rim. Yep, I said it! If the rim of your wine glass is wet, lipsticks that are made of waxes and oils are less likely to transfer onto the surface. You might have a bit of fun doing this on the sly so that no one notices however!
Top 5 Things Women Should Avoid for A Wine Tasting

- If you’re someone who seems ‘tasty’ to mosquitoes, avoid wearing any mosquito/ citronella wrist bands or spray on your wrists.
